چکیده

Background There are no prospective studies comparing the effectiveness of the three iron chelators commercially available in preventing or decreasing iron overload in the heart in pediatric thalassemia major (TM) patients. Our aim was to evaluate the changes in cardiac iron and function by quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) over a follow-up (FU) of 18 months in pediatric TM patients treated with one of the 3 available iron chelators in monotherapy or non-chelated.

Efficacy of Deferasirox (Exjade®) versus Osveral® in Treatment of Iron Overload in Patients with Beta- thalassemia Major in Iran; A Non-randomized Controlled Trial

Background: Iron chelators are an important part of management of patients with thalassemia. It is prudent to compare efficacy of different iron chelators in treatment of iron overload in these patients who receive regular blood transfusion. We aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of available oral iron chelator; Deferasirox (Exjade®) with Deferasirox (Osveral®) in reducing iron ove...

The Relation between Left Ventricular Function and Serum Ferritin in Major Β-Thalassemia

Abstract Objective Cardiac dysfunction is a major cause of death in patients with beta thalassemia. In these patients, repeated blood transfusion, ineffective erythropoiesis and increased gastrointestinal iron absorption lead to iron overload in the body and this induced heart failure. Left ventricular ejection fraction was measured in major beta thalassemia (β-Th) patients to detect the rela...

Assessment of Organ Specific Iron Overload in Transfusion-dependent Thalassemia by Magnetic Resonance Imaging Techniques

The consequence of repeated blood transfusions in thalassemia is iron overload in different organs. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a reliable, non-invasive and accurate method for iron detection in various tissues, hence the introduction of MRI has revolutionized the management of these patients and improved the life expectancy of them. Cardiac MRI T2* has a profound effect not only on est...

Association between serum ferritin level, cardiac and hepatic T2-star MRI in patients with major β-thalassemia

Background Frequent blood transfusion is often associated with iron overload. Proper use of iron chelators to treat iron overload requires an accurate measurement of iron levels. Magnetic resonance T2-star (T2* MRI) can measure iron level in the heart and liver. Our goal was to see whether an association exists between serum ferritin level and T2* MRI in patients with major beta thalassemia. ...

Effects of Alpha-Lipoid Acid on Serum Iron, Total Iron Binding Capacity and Hematological Indices in β-Thalassemia Major Patients: A Cross Over Clinical Trial

Background and Objectives: Accumulation of iron is the most common consequences of repeated blood transfusions in β-thalassemia major patients. Iron chelating effects of alpha-lipoic acid have been reported by several studies. The aim of this study was to investigate effects of supplementation with alpha-lipoic acid, as a chelator, on serum iron and hematological indices in these patients.  Ma...
